Alignment of our goal to activate residents as social change agents, it is important for us to own a permanent space during this transformational period in Wilkinsburg’s history. Not only, would this provide a home for Civically Inc.’s operations, it would offer office space for professional and viable businesses.
The Hunter Building is a historic structure located right in the heart of the Business District. It is an anchor building encompassing 619-623 Penn Avenue and 1001-1007 Wood Street resulting in 21,725 SF. Currently, it houses the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation and a local print shop.
There is a high demand for office space in Wilkinsburg, especially for space where a safe environment with a variety of commercial offerings and nearby amenities that are walkable. With the location of the Hunter Building, it is prime to fit all of those needs.
Civically's plan is to create a sense of space and encourage vibrancy in the Business District.
We envision the first floor to be a multi-purpose space with a café, potential pop-up gallery for artists/artisans, and a courtyard to host various evening events to activate the block’s nightlife are some of concepts to emerge from initial discussions. The second and third floors presents long-term opportunities for commercial space and office customers.
Civically is committed to the lasting social and economic developments in Wilkinsburg. Through our programming, initiatives, and renovation of the Hunter Building we are assisting in the change in reframing the narrative of Wilkinsburg’s future and not leaving anyone out of the story.
